Welcome to the Rippon Middle School Gifted Education Department! This page is designed to provide current and prospective students with information about our program, aa well as answering more common questions about the process for requesting that your child be evaluated for possible gifted services.
When will my child have SIGNET at Rippon?
Here at Rippon, 6th and 7th grade students participate in SIGNET as a part of their Encore Rotation. For the upcoming year, 8th graders will participate on a pull-out bases to allow for participation in advanced Music classes and Foreign Language. 8th graders will come to SIGNET on a rotating schedule so that no more than one class will be missed from each Encore area per month. Schedules for this rotation will be provided to 8th graders in the fall.
If your child was in the SIGNET program in 4th and or 5th grades in Elementary School, they will automatically receive gifted services in Middle School as well. Please note that SIGNET is listed as
Independent Study
on student schedules. If you did not live in Prince William County when the 2nd and 3rd grade identification process normal occurs, you may request to have you child evaluated at any time. (Please see Tips for Parents Interested in SIGNET for more detailed information about the process).
** Military Families: Prince William Public Schools has a limited reciprocal agreement with Military families. If your student was identified as needing gifted services in another state during you military service, and you are still active in the military, your child is eligible to be placed temporarily in gifted services. Your child will still need to go through the normal identification process. Your child's placement could change based on the outcome of our testing and collection of evidence. For that reason, it is recommended that you speak with the gifted resource teacher prior to requesting placement.
How can I refer my child for evaluation?
Anyone can request that a student be evaluated for Gifted Education Service. Please refer to the county
Gifted Services
page for updated information and forms in a multiple languages.
Prince William County is now conducting initial screening for all 6th and 9th grade students through the use of the Naglieri II test. The Gifted Resource teacher will notify parents of any student who is deemed to require further testing.
**Due to the pandemic, many 6th graders did choose to come in to the building for testing. Those students will be given another opportunity in the fall of the 2021-2022 school year.
What is the best way to get in touch with me
?
Existing parents, please take the time to check your address and phone numbers in the school system. Each year I find at least 5-10 families with incorrect contact information in the system. This makes communicating with you very difficult, and I often send out group emails with important information about opportunities for Gifted Students.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have. Email is the easiest method and the one most likely to get the quickest response. I will make every effort to respond to your questions within 24 hours. My email address is
[email protected]
The phone number here is (703) 491-2171 ext 3112.
